## Flow accuracy is the specification

Everything else on an infusion pump is convenience. Ask for flow verification across the rate range the department actually uses — a pump accurate at 100 mL/hr and drifting at 2 mL/hr is dangerous in exactly the settings where low rates matter, which is neonatal and critical care.

Check the occlusion alarm and the pressure threshold. A pump that does not alarm on occlusion will run a line dry or infiltrate a limb without reporting either.

## Standardise where you can

Mixed pump fleets cost more than they save. Every model has its own giving set, its own training burden and its own spares list, and staff moving between wards have to relearn the interface. Where a department can standardise on one pump, it should.
